The heart of Monfragüe

Millions of years ago, the sea covered the entire area. Slowly it was withdrawing and creating rivers that brought minerals such as slate, this created the land. The gallop of the wind passed freely doing its thing and next to the water they shaped this land exchanging the shape we know today. In a natural place, the vegetation grows, holm oaks, cork oaks, heather, strawberry trees, gall oaks, cistus and up to 300 different species that create the Mediterranean forest. In it he found shelter different animals, including man. 23% of the surface of Torrejón el Rubio is within the limits of the National Park. Much of the area that can be visited, of what you can see when you travel to this place, is in the municipal area of our town. For example, the Castle and the Hermitage, as well as the Rock Painting Shelter belong to 5,000 square meters owned by the town of Torrejón el Rubio. One of the main treasures of Monfragüe are its shaded areas. It is there where you can see the Mediterranean forest in all its splendor, as a mirror of what a large part of the vegetation in this area once formed, becoming one of the last places where it is preserved. A large part of its shady areas are located in the municipality of Torrejón el Rubio. If we talk about birds, in our area, there are half of the pairs of imperial eagles registered in Monfragüe, as well as one of the main colonies of black and griffon vultures in the area.
